Description
Welcome to Historic Mexico Missouri; Mainstreet of the Midwest sign. In 1836, Mexico was formally "New Mexico as it was a major stop for settlers heading to the Republic of Texas. It became the Audrian County seat in 1837 and "New" was dropped after the Mexican War which saw Texas become part of the USA.
Incorporated in 1855, Mexico was serviced by the Wabash Railroad (1858) and the Alton Railroad (1872). Finally in 1874 Mexico was chartered a city. It was a major shipping hub for horses, mules and fire brick, which gave Mexico, MO. it's moniker, "Fire Brick Capital of the World" back then. In 2002 the fire brick plants closed.
