Description
The Grand Theatre was built in the late 1930's and is located on the southside of Fort Worth. The local newspaper headline on May 13, 1938 read, "Modern Negro Theater is Opened" and boasted 526 seats downstairs and 274 seats in the balcony. It was estimated to have cost $40,000 to build the modernly equipped theater and is a Black Historical Landmark.
The theater closed in 1981 or 1982. In 2012 it was rumored this grand dame would be restored and be a community theatre. Yet this image was taken in 2016, showing nothing had started; though the neon still looked intact on the marquee. While I haven't been by the Grand in some time, I hope the city of Fort Worth or a private investor will renovate her in grand style. It would be a historical loss if it was torn down...
