Description
Private investors during the late 1920s financed several international suspension bridges across the Rio Grande River hoping to stimulate commercial development in the lower Rio Grande Valley. The only one standing today is from Roma, Texas to Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Tamaulipas.
These bridge cables show details that were captured on the US side. It was taken out of service in 1979 after the new bridge was constructed. The US and Mexico have been meetting for years to preserve the bridge as a pedestrian crossing.
Efforts have been delayed due to procedural differences and the bridge is considered an obstruction of waterways. It is unknown the fate of this historical structure.
